Artist bio
My full name is Blanca Paulina Becerra Bibian. Each part carries the weight of my lineage and layers of my identity. It is a name that ties me to my history and roots in Guanajuato, México, where I first discovered the power of storytelling through art. The culture, mysticism, and contradictions of my homeland continue to inspire me, particularly the occult and spiritual traditions that have long fascinated me. Although I was raised catholic there was a strange force drawing me to the occult, the unseen, and the unspoken.
My early exposure to painting was at the cultural center “Casa de la Cultura” and at the museum “Museo José y Tomás Chávez Morado” in Silao, Guanajuato. As the eldest daughter, expectations weighed heavily on me. Responsibility, self-restraint, and emotional suppression were ingrained early, shaping how I navigated the world. Yet, these same constraints fueled my need for artistic expression.
It was after a particular class day in which our teacher gave us a tour of the museum that I knew I was an artist. Creating became the language for everything I was taught to silence but even as I learned and watched from experts I still felt something was missing. Making good drawings was no longer enough. I needed something deeper, something true to my experience.
To endure the painful separation from my culture and family after I moved to the United States, I found solace in creating. It became the only constant during my transition and assimilation during my formative years. After entering high school I discovered what I was missing. I was missing my family in a literal sense but the feeling that came afterwards was much deeper. I was always missing a connection with myself, my repressed emotions, and the weight of having to exceed expectations.
Much of my work challenges the stereotypes imposed on Mexican women, rejecting the roles I was expected to follow. The beliefs I once held have shifted, evolving as I forge a path beyond the narratives prescribed to me. Through art, I reinterpret Mexican imagery, not just as an act of nostalgia for my homeland and childhood memories, but as a means to deconstruct and redefine my identity on my own terms. Today, my practice extends across various mediums, serving as a bridge between discomfort, understanding, and connection. I believe art to be a reclamation of one’s self, a way to give shape to the unseen, and an invitation for others to find themselves reflected in my work.
Artist Statement
My homeland’s culture, mysticism, and spiritual traditions deeply influence my work. As the eldest daughter, I was burdened with expectations of responsibility and emotional suppression, which shaped my perspective and fueled my need for artistic expression. Art became the language for everything I was taught to silence. However, it wasn’t until I moved to the United States and experienced the painful separation from my culture and family that I truly found solace in creating. My work challenges the stereotypes imposed on Mexican women and offers a distinct perspective by reinterpreting traditional Mexican imagery. Through my art, I give form to raw, unspoken emotions, navigating the complexities of my identity. Art has become a reclamation of self, a way to transform the unseen, and an invitation for others with similar experiences to find themselves reflected in my work.
